The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has established a Working Group on Greek Honey and Beekeeping Products (Decision 172446/1-6-2026).

The Committee consists of:
specialized scientists in apiculture; representatives of the Federation of Greek Beekeeping Associations; Greek honey packers and distributors; beekeeping cooperatives; inspection and control authorities (ELGO-DIMITRA and EFET); the General Chemical State Laboratory; and administrative officials of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.

The Ministry also invited a representative of the European Beekeeping Association (EBA) to participate in the Committee, thereby recognizing EBA’s active contribution to the fight against honey fraud and its efforts to support and promote local beekeepers.

The Committee’s areas of discussion include:

  1. a) The development and implementation of digital tools for honey traceability.
  2. b) The harmonization and combined use of validated methodologies for honey analysis and quality control.
  3. c) The identification, legal protection, certification, and promotion of the distinctive characteristics of various types of Greek honey.
  4. d) The updating of the regulatory framework concerning inspections, sanctions, and related matters, as well as organizational and structural reforms in the honey and beekeeping sector.

As the EBA representative, Professor Andreas Thrasyvoulou, a member of the EBA Scientific Committee on Safety and Quality of Bee Products, has been nominated. Professor Thrasyvoulou frequently presents the Committee’s positions and his views on these issues in the EBA magazine No Bees No Life.
